The fan palm is often kept as a houseplant, as it brings a Mediterranean atmosphere into the home with its impressive leaves. However, it often happens that livistona rotundifolia gets brown leaves that have to be cut off.

Dry leaves on the fan palm should be removed promptly

Causes of the browning of the leaves

It is usually due to incorrect or insufficient care. Brown leaves can be caused by:

  • snapped leaves
  • too much water
  • not enough water
  • nutrient deficiency
  • lack of space
  • pests

Broken leaves

Leaves or stems can snap if the plant is exposed to the wind on the patio. If the stem is injured, the leaf is no longer adequately supplied and dies. Cut off the brown frond close to the trunk so that there are no leftovers and space for germs or parasites.

Too much water

Fan palms do not tolerate waterlogging. Make sure there is a drainage hole in the flower pot. To be on the safe side, a drainage layer made of potsherds or expanded clay (€19.73) can be introduced when planting.
If the soil is too wet for a long time, the plant must be drained. You take the palm tree out of its plant pot and remove the wet soil. Plant your palm tree in fresh soil.

Not enough water

Livistona rotundifolia needs sufficient watering at regular intervals. Their roots don't go deep enough to suck up the last bit of water in the pot, instead they begin to dry up. Have you forgotten to water for a long time?
place the plant in the shower and water it until the soil is moist again.

Inadequate nutrient supply

The potting soil is gradually leached out from the heavy watering. Therefore, a suitable complete fertilizer must be used from time to time.

lack of space

The fan palm can also grow a few meters indoors. Especially during the growing season in spring, the planter quickly becomes too small. This can be seen, for example, in the fact that the roots are already growing out of the bottom of the pot or that the potting soil seems to be getting less and less and the roots are also sticking out at the top. In such cases, repotting will prevent the fronds from turning brown.

pests

Here powdery mildew and spider mites are the causes of brown palm fronds. They are combated with suitable pesticides.
