Conifers are popular hedge plants, but they can also be cultivated in pots and decorate the balcony or terrace in this form. Like all potted plants, conifers in pots require significantly more care than outdoors.

Cultivation in the bucket
The thuja is ideal for planting in a tub. However, the bucket should be of a suitable size so that the plant can root well. Further requirements for the bucket:
- It must have a drain hole.
- A drainage layer should be integrated in the bucket over the drain.
- Cultivation in special soil
- It should be of sufficient width and height.
- A set of wheels is convenient.
The opening in the bottom of the bucket is particularly important to prevent waterlogging. The conifers like moisture, but not standing water. The roots would rot and the bush would die. So that the soil is not washed out of the drain when watering or in rainy weather, a layer of gravel or expanded clay (€19.73) should be sprinkled over the hole when planting. The drainage is covered with fleece and then the potting soil is filled in and the conifers are inserted.
Plant conifers in the bucket
With a conifer as a container plant, it should be noted that the soil used contains special nutrients, especially for conifers. The soil is provided with the right proportions of humus, sand and fertilizer. So the shrub has everything it needs to root well in the beginning. Proceed as follows when planting:
- Put a layer of drainage in the tub.
- Now place the shrub in the middle of the planter.
- Add coniferous soil to the pot, being careful not to push the bush off the center.
- Press the soil in between and fill up to 5 cm below the edge.
- Water the conifer.
Winter protection for conifers in tubs
Conifers are hardy and can also be overwintered in buckets. Since the earth can freeze quickly here in particular and the conifers are damaged, optimal winter protection must be provided during the winter period. Place your conifer on a styrofoam plate (€35.50) and wrap the bucket in bubble wrap. The plant itself is loosely wrapped in fleece or a jute sack (€10.99).
