After the dreary winter months, spring flowers finally bring color to the garden or balcony box. As a rule, the flower bulbs are already planted in the ground in autumn, some species will still flower if they are not planted until January or February.

Tulips are a standard spring bloomer

The right location for early bloomers

If you bring the early bloomers into the ground in autumn, you should choose the location with care.
A good location gets enough moisture, but does not form waterlogging.
Depending on the species, the locations can be sunny to shady. Crocuses are also often planted in the lawn. In order to be able to enjoy the splendor of the flowers, you should only mow when the crocuses have withered.

What should be considered when buying onions?

In autumn, a wide variety of flower bulbs for spring are offered in garden centers and also at discounters. Since there are always several onions in the packaging, you should check carefully whether the onions are dry and not already sprouted. You should refrain from buying damaged bulbs. It is also important to find out about the expiry date of the onions.

Plant the tubers and bulbs at the right time

The dry days in autumn are suitable for planting the early bloomers. The soil is now well moist and no night frosts are to be expected. The bulbs can establish themselves in the soil and prepare for spring budding.
If you missed the right time in autumn, you don't have to miss out on a colorful spring. There are onion varieties that can also be planted in January or February.
