Although spruces are best known as trees in the forest, they can also be planted in the garden. However, you should make sure that you keep a sufficient distance to buildings, because spruce trees have shallow roots and are therefore very susceptible to wind.

It is best to plant a spruce in a sunny or semi-shady place with slightly moist soil. It tolerates neither prolonged drought nor waterlogging really well. Especially when it is dry and warm, it quickly becomes a victim of the bark beetle. Otherwise, spruces have no special demands on the soil, they can tolerate almost any pH value.
The essentials in brief:
- Shallow-rooted, therefore susceptible to wind
- likes sun or partial shade
- tolerates neither long periods of drought nor waterlogging
- prefers fresh soil
- is relatively pH tolerant
tips
Since spruces are very susceptible to wind because of their flat roots, they should not be too close to buildings.
