If you are interested in growing onions in your own garden, you will find that there are many different types of onions that differ in colour, size and taste. If you want a mildly aromatic and decorative variety, you should plant red onions.

The peculiarity of the red onion
In addition to many vitamins, the red onion has twice as many antioxidants as the conventional yellow varieties. Together with the other ingredients, it strengthens the immune system, bones and nerves. It tastes slightly sweet, but also has a mild spiciness. Externally, it immediately catches the eye with its red to dark violet, shiny shell and relatively thin skin.
Plant red onions properly
Just like the traditional yellow onion, the red onion is easy to cultivate in the garden. Good preparation pays off later with a good harvest.
Prepare the ground
A well-loosened, sandy soil that is not too wet is the basic requirement for cultivation. Fresh manure should also not be applied, because the onions cannot tolerate too much nitrogen. However, some mature compost can be incorporated before sowing the onions. If compost is not available, a fertilizer containing potassium can also be used.
Set the red onion sets
From the end of March, when the temperatures are a little milder, the onion sets can be planted in the bed. Plant two-thirds of the bulb in the ground about every 10 to 15 cm in neat rows. To keep the rows straight, you can use a taut planting cord, which is offset row by row by about 30 cm. Another tool is the planter. You use it to pre-drill the planting hole and then place the bulb lightly in the ground and then press down a little.
Caring for the red onion sets
When all the onion sets are in the ground, carefully water them once. Further watering is not necessary even in dry weather. In hot summers, a layer of mulch placed between the bulbs can retain moisture and prevent the soil from drying out too much.
A mulch (€239.00) made of fern or sage also prevents onion flies from settling and their larvae from eating the young onion bulbs.
During the growth phase of the onions, the bed should be regularly cleared of weeds and the soil slightly loosened.
