Mirabelle plum trees are usually in full bloom between the beginning of April and the end of May. Gardens and public parks shine in a sea of beautiful white flowering trees. But what if the mirabelle plum just doesn't want to bloom in your own garden? Possible reasons and suitable solutions can be found here:

If the Mirabelle does not have any flowers, there can be various reasons
  1. The tree is too young
  2. Poor site conditions
  3. Lack of care

Young trees take a little longer

Anyone who is worried because their Mirabelle plum is not blooming should know that the current information on the flowering period is based on "adult" trees. Mirabelle plums up to five years old usually bear only a few flowers anyway and hardly any fruit at all. The knowledge of the normal flowering time serves only as a guideline for the timing of the tree pruning. Some hobby gardeners even make the experience that their fruit tree takes up to ten years with the rewarding flowering period. If your plum tree is still relatively young, there is hope. Maybe the time is just not right yet.

Site conditions not ideal

If, on the other hand, it is not a very young tree or if the mirabelle plum has already flowered with magnificent white umbels, the location could possibly prevent it from continuing to flower in full. On the one hand, mirabelle plums have it a little harder in cloudy, rather cool and rainy regions anyway. There are also changes on site: Does the tree still get enough sun? Is the soil structure consistent? Are there potential enemies such as voles that feed on the roots? Check if the location is still as good as when you planted it. Otherwise, transplant the tree.

Observe appropriate care

Mirabelles are generally considered uncomplicated and easy to care for, as long as they get enough sunlight. However, this does not mean that you should leave the fruit trees to their own devices. Support the plant with regular pruning. In young trees under the age of five, this serves to form a stable basic structure. Later, maintenance and rejuvenation pruning help to thin out the rapidly growing crown so that all branches, shoots and fruits get enough light and air. If you spot water sprouts, remove them. Because these are shoots that protrude steeply upwards, which unnecessarily cost the plum tree strength that it may then lack when flowering.
