Digging is one of the most effective measures in the fight against annoying weeds. However, this topic is discussed controversially among hobby gardeners and experts, because you can make a lot of mistakes when digging up. In the following article you will find out how to proceed sensibly and when the right time is.

Digging is an effective weapon against weeds

tool list

Since digging is quite strenuous work, you should make sure you have good tools:

  • The spade used should have a handle that is comfortable for you, a handle length adapted to your height and a sharp blade.
  • Alternatively, you can use a spade fork. This is suitable for hard, stony soils as it penetrates the soil more easily.
  • A rake to finish off the soil.
  • Wear gloves to prevent blisters.
  • Sturdy shoes are mandatory, otherwise the edge of the spade will press through the sole of the shoe.

How is it dug up?

Do this work systematically. You can bring in removed weeds as fertilizer:

  • First dig a ditch in the bed with the spade.
  • Then dig up the earth below the furrow and throw it into the trough.
  • Turn the spade so that the weeds land on the bottom and are completely covered by soil.
  • Pick out root weeds, as these would also sprout again from small root residues.
  • You can also put garden waste or humus in the furrows. Covered with soil, these rot and form valuable fertilizer.

After digging, collect any greenery that can still be seen and level the earth with the rake.

How deep should you dig?

It is usually sufficient to dig the spade halfway into the ground. If the earth is very compacted, you should dig up to the depth of a spade.

Digging with twice the spade depth is recommended for heavily weed beds. Any remaining turf and weeds get so deep into the ground, rot and can no longer grow back.

When is the best time to dig up?

You should preferably do this work in the fall. During the winter, the soil organisms can become active and turn the undermined greenery into valuable humus.

tips

If you have dug in the autumn, it is sufficient to carefully loosen the soil with a digging fork in the spring. If you discover any remaining root weeds on this occasion, carefully read them out again. This keeps the tiresome weeding work within limits in the coming gardening season.
