The walnut tree has certain special features in every season - including in winter. Our guide will inform you about the special characteristics of the walnut in the cool season.

The walnut tree has no leaves in winter

Optical characteristics of the walnut in winter

From a visual point of view, the walnut tree is particularly impressive in winter due to the following points:

  • The rind of the walnut takes on a silvery hue. It can become almost white (no, not only with snow, but in general!).
  • The walnut is completely bare, so that its gnarled knots really come into their own. Some home gardeners find these branches unattractive, while others find that the knots add character to the tree.

The flowering cycle begins in late winter

After the walnut harvest in autumn, the plant's flowering cycle soon starts all over again: the walnut tree forms new buds as early as late winter, which ultimately produce pretty, but tendentially unspectacular flowers in spring.

By the way: If the winter was long and hard, flowering often starts even later than is already the case with walnut trees.

Health aspects of walnuts in winter

The fact is that the walnut tree is a frost-sensitive plant. Severe frost damage can occur, especially in severe or excessively long winters.

Young trees must be protected from frost, otherwise they hardly have a chance of surviving. Fortunately, overwintering the growing trees is relatively easy: it is usually sufficient to place the respective young tree in a pot or bucket in a room that is bright and safe from frost.

Water only moderately, but make sure that your young walnut tree is not in completely dried out substrate. The tree sheds its leaves, which shouldn't surprise you.

Only when a walnut tree has lignified is it able to survive the winter outdoors. However, we advise you to continue to protect your walnut from frost outdoors, including the possible damage. For this purpose recommend

  • Mulch (239.00€) and mats on the ground
  • fleece and mats to protect the trunk as well
  • wrapping the crown with garden fleece (if the frost lasts for a long time or the winter is particularly harsh)
