Do you already own a golden elm and would like to add another specimen to your inventory? Before you have to travel long distances to the nearest tree nursery and pay dearly for the new tree, you can use the following instructions to grow another golden elm yourself.

The golden elm can, for example, be propagated via offshoots

Different ways of propagation

There are two different ways of propagating the golden elm, both of which have advantages and disadvantages:

  • the refinement
  • propagation by offshoots

The refinement

The propagation of a plant by grafting is a very complex process for which you must have specialist knowledge. In most cases, only trained dealers use this technique. You can buy small cuttings that have already been grafted in the nursery.

Propagation by offshoots

Nevertheless, it is worth making your own attempt and growing a golden elm from its offshoots. Unfortunately, this method does not always work. Fortunately, the deciduous tree tends to form very strong runners. You can increase this tendency even further by cutting back your golden elm vigorously. For the loss that the tree suffers on the surface of the earth, it tries to compensate by spreading underground. Note, however, that promoting the runners can certainly lead to undesirable consequences. The new shoots often emerge in beds or under stone slabs, just where they destroy laboriously laid out sections of the garden.
This is how you proceed with the propagation of the golden elm by offshoots:

  1. look for young shoots near the trunk of the parent tree and carefully dig them up
  2. be careful not to damage the roots. This would further increase the formation of foothills
  3. the offshoots must have formed enough roots of their own for propagation to succeed
  4. immediately plant the removed stolon elsewhere in the garden
  5. water the young golden elm well, also for the next few days
