Spinach is extremely nutritious and versatile. It is just as good in salads as it is in various pasta or potato dishes. Spring spinach from local cultivation is in season from March to May, and winter spinach from September. We will tell you what you should pay attention to when storing spinach.

What to consider when buying
In fact, storing spinach properly begins when you buy it from the supermarket or other grocery store. You basically have the choice between root and leaf spinach. Most hobby cooks prefer leaf spinach, where only the individual leaves are harvested. In contrast, root spinach, as the name suggests, comes with the root base (and thus almost as a complete plant).
Compared to root spinach, the finer leaf spinach is much more sensitive. So handle your pack carefully and make sure that the leaves are not crushed - neither during transport nor later when storing.
Important: Only take specimens whose leaves are juicy green and crisp.
How to properly store spinach
Spinach is one of the vegetables that have a relatively short shelf life. It is best to process and consume it immediately after purchase or on the same day. If that doesn't work, you can store your spinach in the fridge for a maximum of four days.
tips
Cover the spinach with a damp cloth. With this simple measure, you slow down the wilting process so that the vegetables taste good and intense even on the fourth day.
Attention: Put your spinach in the fridge immediately after you get home and generally don't keep it unrefrigerated for long. This also means that you should take the green vegetables to safety as quickly as possible after buying them and not be out and about with them for a while.
Store spinach in the freezer
There is a way to preserve spinach for several months or even a year or two. To do this, you need to freeze it. Our brief guide shows you the correct procedure:
- Blanch the spinach for a few minutes.
- Briefly shock him in ice water.
- Gently squeeze and dry the spinach.
- Pack the vegetables in portions in freezer bags or cans.
- Seal the containers airtight.
- Place the spinach containers in the freezer.
Caution: After about five to six months, frozen spinach loses vitamins, taste and color. If possible, consume it before this period expires.
