Many people only know sesame in the form of sesame buns, i.e. buns that are sprinkled with sesame, or as part of muesli bars. But the almost white, small grains can do much more. Roasted, for example, they refine soups, salads and panades for pan-fried dishes. Roasted sesame also brings a pleasantly nutty taste to muesli or smoothies.

Roasting sesame is very quick

Sesame is healthy

The grains contain many vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids, trace elements and fiber. For example, there is more calcium in a tablespoonful of sesame than in half a glass of milk. 100 g of sesame cover the daily iron requirement for adults.
In addition to calcium and iron, sesame contains many other minerals that make it very valuable for our body.
Using it in the kitchen is easy. Sesame can be roasted in a pan in no time. Its nutty taste refines numerous dishes.

Roast sesame

If you want to roast sesame, you only need a little time, because the roasting process in the pan only takes a few minutes. However, you should taste the grains several times, because too much heat immediately spoils the good taste.

  1. First wash the amount of sesame seeds you want to toast.
  2. Drain the grains well on a kitchen towel or in a fine sieve.
  3. Prepare a bowl for the toasted sesame seeds.
  4. Heat a pan on medium-high.
  5. Once the pan has reached temperature, add the still-wet sesame seeds. Don't use oil.
  6. Toast the grains, stirring constantly, until they turn brown. This takes about two to three minutes and the sesame starts to pop, the grains jump in the pan.
  7. As soon as a grain can be easily ground into flour between your fingers, the sesame is ready.
  8. Immediately remove the grains from the heat and pour them into the bowl. Do not leave the sesame in the pan, the residual heat could burn the delicate seeds.
  9. Let the sesame cool completely.

Roasted sesame is stored in a dry and dark place. Airtight packaging is suitable for storage, for example a glass jar with a screw cap. Properly stored, the roasted sesame will keep for a few months.

Roast sesame in the oven

As an alternative to roasting on the stove, the sesame can also be baked in the oven.

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Put the sesame seeds on the baking sheet. The grains should not be too thick on top of each other, as this will prolong the roasting process.
  4. Shake the pan every few minutes to keep the kernels from burning.
  5. The seeds should be browned in about ten minutes.
  6. Place the seeds on a cold sheet or tray to cool.
