Propagation by cuttings is a common method for many potted plants. Bougainvilleas can also be reproduced in this way. It's not easy - but we'll explain how you can do it.

Bougainvillea is easy to propagate from cuttings

The procedure for setting cuttings

In principle, the propagation of cuttings with the bougainvillea works like with other cultivated plants: A shoot is cut and placed in a seed pot for its own rooting. However, this does not work so easily with bougainvillea. Above all, your cuttings need a lot of ground heat - over a long period of time. Appropriate equipment is therefore required and also some stamina.

Basic principle of bougainvillea cuttings propagation:

  • Cut the cuttings and let them root in the seed tray
  • Requirements for rooting: Lots of warmth and time

Step 1: Cut and set the cuttings

For the cutting, select a mature but not yet lignified shoot of about 30 cm in length between the beginning of spring and mid-summer. Put this in a pot or a growing bed that offers increased soil warmth. The bougainvillea cutting needs about 30 to 35°C for rooting. Floor heating is therefore almost indispensable.

rooting powder

To induce rooting, a hormonal rooting powder is also very helpful. Just add it to the substrate.

create microclimate

A warm, humid microclimate is also beneficial for its development - so ideally put it in a mini greenhouse. If you don't have one available, you can just cover it with foil instead.

Step 2: Keep moist and warm - and wait

You need a lot of patience for rooting - it can take several months. During this time, you have to continuously maintain the ground-warm and protected climate - so it's important to stay on the ball here.

Step 3: Harden off and transplant

If the rooting is finally successful, you should prepare the cutting for an independent life as soon as possible. That means hardening him little by little. Start exposing it to greater fluctuations in light and shade, and also greater temperature differences. However, do not proceed too harshly, but gradually increase the new challenges. When you feel that the cutting has grown strong enough, transplant it into its own pot. Here he can now continue to thrive.
