Bougainvillea lovers know it: in this country, the tropical beauties cannot be cultivated as outdoor plants. In our latitudes, keeping buckets is mandatory anyway. In the following, we will show you how the South American divas thrive indoors all year round.

The origin-specific claims of Bougainvillea
Bougainvilleas are a horticultural gem for a reason - with their colorful bracts they provide the eye with a magnificent picture. Bougainvillea come from a comparatively limited area between Ecuador and Brazil and are therefore dependent on very special climatic and soil conditions. The seasonal rhythm and the cooler temperatures of our latitudes are therefore less good for them. So how do you create conditions that are as close to their origin as possible for the lush Andean plants in order to cultivate them indoors to their full splendor?
Choose a sunny location
So what the bougainvillea needs according to its dry tropical home is a lot of sun, distinct dry and wet phases and nutrient-rich soil. You can also offer her all of this in her room. Of course, a heated conservatory with full sunlight yield would be ideal for year-round cultivation. If you can't call one your own, a location with a generous window front, which faces south if possible, is also suitable. This is how you satisfy the bougainvillea's great hunger for light and warmth.
nutrient-rich substrate, small tub
The Bougainvillea's home region offers nutrient-rich soil. Therefore, you should also offer it a correspondingly rich substrate when keeping it in tubs indoors. It should primarily contain minerals and can also be enriched with clay. Permeability is important to protect the roots from waterlogging, to which Bougainvillea is very sensitive. In order to bring the plant too many flowers, a small bucket is recommended. If there is too much substrate, it tends to form more leaves - to the detriment of the flowers.
Careful pouring practice
Bougainvilleas should always be kept moist, but protected from waterlogging. You should make sure that there is a sufficient, even water supply, especially during the growing season. This can of course be a bit more challenging in the heated room. However, the bougainvillea will thank you for a careful pouring practice with colorful, lush flowers.
Here is an overview of the cultivation of bougainvilleas in the room:
- choose a sunny, warm location (facing south) if possible
- plant in rather small buckets with a nutrient-rich, mineral-rich substrate
- Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging as much as possible
