Plant giant leeks

The giant leek prefers a sunny location and moderately nutrient-rich soil. Plant the giant leek together with woodland sage, lady's mantle or peonies, the plants go well together. The onion needs a planting depth of about 20 centimeters. A layer of sand about five centimeters high at the bottom of the planting hole ensures good water drainage and a little protection against frost in winter.

Water and fertilize giant leeks

You only have to water your giant leeks if the drought persists. If the leaves begin to turn yellow in summer, this is not an indication of a lack of water, but completely normal. Regular fertilization is recommended.

The flower of the giant leek

The red to purple spherical flower of the giant leek with a diameter of up to twelve centimeters is a real splendour. It usually shows itself in the middle of summer, because the flowering time is only in June and August. Giant leek is excellent as a cut flower. Its stems are quite strong and up to 1.50 meters long.

Cut giant leek

As soon as the giant leek begins to bloom, the leaves begin to turn yellow. While it's not a particularly pretty sight, don't cut the yellow leaves too early. Because now the nutrients slowly migrate from the leaves into the bulb, where they are needed for the budding next spring. Incidentally, this applies to various types of ornamental onions.

If you cut too early, you risk that your giant leek may not flower next year. If you are bothered by the yellowing leaves, it is better to plant some ground cover around the leek, such as low grasses, lavender, oregano or bed roses.
