There is no room in the natural garden for pompous exotic species that have nothing to counter the climatic challenges of Central Europe. Only proven, local survivors are included in the authentic design plan. The aesthetics are by no means neglected. These plants transform the natural garden into a sea of flowers.

The beautiful Great Masterwort should not be missing in the natural garden

Native wild perennials - the floral backbone in the natural garden

The ideal natural garden is a floral reflection of its unspoilt surroundings. Therefore, preferably include plants in the design plan that you can come across on a walk in the field and forest. The following species are not only native, but also inspire with an abundance of flowers:

  • wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa); Flowering time from March to April
  • Dark columbine (Aquilegia atrata); blooming classic from May to June
  • dyer's chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria); golden flowers from June to October
  • Great masterwort (Astrantia major); white-pink flowers from June to July with a second bloom in September

Flower beauty with natural charm unfold native ornamental grasses with delicate spike flowers. Heart trembling grass (Briza media) inspires in sunny locations from May to July with green-yellow heart spikes that sway gently in the wind. Where light is scarce, the shade sedge (Carex umbrosa) trumps with red-brown spikes in April and May.

Flowering shrubs - privacy screen and bird food at the same time

In the natural garden, the function of the plants is not limited to their decorative aspect. They only deserve a place in the planting plan when their beauty is combined with a useful function. Therefore, native flowering shrubs with a privacy factor are primarily considered for the trees and shrubs in the enclosure, the flowers and berries of which serve as food for animals. The following species have qualified for this purpose:

  • Bird cherry (Prunus padus) with white flower spikes from April to May and berries in autumn
  • Woolly Snowball (Viburnum lantana) with creamy-white panicles from May and red-black berries
  • Small-fruited ornamental apple (Malus sargentii) with white spring flowers and yellow-red apples
  • Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) with white umbels of flowers and black, vitamin-rich fruits

The best time to plant a hedge of wild fruit bushes is in autumn, when the sun-warmed soil offers the roots ideal conditions.

tips

Flower meadows are the jewel in the natural garden design. The specialist trade has certified seed for all site conditions. Thanks to a well-considered mixture of wildflowers and grasses, flower meadows are conditionally hardwearing for the natural garden and are only mowed once or twice a season.
