Although it sounds so simple, mistakes are often made when planting flower pots. This causes the plants to wither, become ill or die. Find out below how to plant your flower pots step by step and what to pay particular attention to.

This is something to keep in mind when planting in flower pots
- The pot must be big enough.
- The pot must have drainage.
- Make sure you choose the right location! Some plants like it rather sunny, others rather shady.
- If your flower pot is placed on a saucer outdoors, this should be emptied after heavy rain.
The right size of flower pot
When buying flower pots and plants, make sure that the dimensions are right: the flower pot should be big enough so that there is two to three centimeters of space between the roots of the plants and the edge of the flower pot. This also applies if you want to put several plants in the pot. The same distance between the individual plants must also be maintained.
Drainage at the flower pot
Waterlogging is highly dangerous for most plants and often ends with the same dying. Therefore, good drainage is the most important challenge for potted plants to thrive. If you make a flower pot yourself, e.g. from an old milk can, you should definitely drill one or more holes in the bottom.
Plant the flower pot step by step
Once you've selected your plants and flowerpot, you're good to go. You need:
- Good garden soil
- maybe some compost
- Pebbles, shards of pottery or expanded clay
- A shovel
1. Place a shard of pottery or some larger pebbles over the water drain to prevent it from clogging.
2. Then fill about a sixth of the flowerpot with pebbles, potsherds or expanded clay.(19.73€)
3. Fill the pot halfway with soil. Older or poorer quality soil can be mixed with some compost to enrich it with nutrients.
4. Place the plant(s) in the pot. Make sure that the root ball ends at least two centimeters below the edge of the flower pot, so that there is enough space for watering.
5. Fill the pot with soil. Leave a space of two to five centimeters between the soil and the edge of the flower pot.
6. Water your plants thoroughly and place them in the desired location.
