- The pond zones in the prefabricated pond
- What should be considered when planting a prefabricated pond?
Plants give every pond its special charm and help to integrate it seamlessly into the garden. In addition, plants clean the water and serve as a retreat for fish, amphibians and other animals. In the following you will find out what you should pay attention to when planting your prefabricated pond and which plants are suitable.

The pond zones in the prefabricated pond
Each pond is usually divided into four zones, which differ in depth and are therefore planted differently:
- Deep water zone: from 60cm (not always available)
- Shallow water zone: 10 to 50cm
- Swamp zone: up to 10cm
- Riparian zone: wet area around the pond
Depending on the pond zone, different pond plants are suitable for planting.
deep water zone
Floating plants or floating leaf plants (with roots in the ground) and underwater plants can be planted in the deep water zone. For example:
Floating plants and floating leaf plants
- frog bite
- crab claws
- sea can
- water lilies
- floating pondweed
- water lilies
- water knotweed
- water chestnut
underwater plants
- horn leaf
- needle ledges
- spring moss
- fir fronds
- thousand leaf
- water spring
- water buttercup
- waterweed
shallow water zone
The plants in the shallow water zone are up to half, sometimes even more, in the water.
- rushes
- frog spoon
- pike weed
- calamus
- Cattails
- horsetails
- reed
- marsh iris
- waterweed
swamp zone
In the swamp zone, the roots of the plants are permanently in the water.
- rushes
- buckbean
- frog spoon
- jester flower
- buttercup
- lye flower
- meadowsweet
- arrowhead
- marsh marigold
- marsh gladiolus
- swamp calla
- Swamp Forget-Me-Nots
riparian zone
Moisture-loving perennials and grasses thrive in the riparian zone. Ground covers are also pretty.
- bamboo grass
- loosestrife
- bugle
- lady's mantle
- lungwort
- mammoth leaf
- Pennywort
- splendor pier
- primroses
- record sheet
- stem flower grass
What should be considered when planting a prefabricated pond?
To ensure that the plants feel comfortable and accept their new location, there are a few things to consider.
When will the finished pond be planted?
The ideal time for planting a prefabricated pond is late spring. Sensitive plants should only be planted when no more frost is definitely expected.
How is the finished pond planted?
When planting in shallow water and swamp zones, it must be ensured that the plants cannot slip off. You can either use plant baskets or attach the plants with stones. It is best to fill your prefabricated pond with rainwater, as many aquatic plants are sensitive to lime.
How dense is planting?
Bear in mind that your pond plants will grow and spread. If you don't want the entire pond to become overgrown in a very short time, or if you constantly have to cut back plants, you shouldn't place the plants too close together. Three to five plants per square meter in shallow water and swamp zones are sufficient. Under water there should only be two to three per square meter.
Make sure that the water surface only grows up to a maximum of two thirds!
