Unfortunately, the pretty Kalanchoe has almost become something of a disposable plant. Unfortunately, many plant lovers think that the succulent would only thrive once a year and once it has faded, further cultivation is not worth it anyway. Our tips, which not only extend the flowering period, prove that this is not the case. Properly cared for, the Kalanchoe will flower again and again every year.

Care during flowering
Do not cut out the withered umbels immediately after the first flowers wither. The flowering period can be extended to several months by doing the following:
- Just carefully pinch out the individual blossoms.
- Only cut out the flower stalks when there are actually no more fresh buds.
And what happens after flowering?
The Kalanchoe is one of the short-day plants. This is the name given to plants that are only allowed to be surrounded by daylight for a few hours in order to flower. If the Kalanchoe has completely faded, the following procedure is therefore recommended:
- First cut off everything that has faded.
- In the fall, when the hours of sunshine naturally decrease, do not provide additional lighting for the Kalanchoe.
- The plant should only be exposed to light for about eight hours a day.
- In rooms where artificial light is often used, you can imitate the long hours of the night with a piece of cardboard cut to size and placed over the plant.
- Inventive natures simply put your Kalanchoe in a cupboard in the evening.
- Lowering the temperature is helpful for flowering, but it should not fall below 15 degrees.
- It is only watered in sips and not fertilized at all.
As soon as the first flowers appear, the Kalanchoe is watered a little more and fertilized on a monthly basis. But be careful: Too much water, especially liquid that collects in the coaster and is not poured away, quickly leads to waterlogging.
tips
Most Kalanchoen are cultivated in the room. The sun-loving succulents also feel extremely comfortable outdoors during the warm summer months. It can be very sunny here, but the houseplant should be carefully accustomed to the changed conditions in the first few days.
