The yucca, which belongs to the agave family, can grow up to five meters high with good care, even in pot culture. However, since living rooms rarely have ceilings of this height, a pruning is unavoidable. The same applies, by the way, if the yucca only develops long and thin shoots - then it gets too little light and has to be cut. Then it drives out stronger and healthier again - provided, of course, that it gets a new, brighter location.

After cutting it off, it makes sense to seal the interface of the yucca

Cut the yucca and seal the cut surfaces

Cutting the yucca palm is basically very simple: Using a sharp knife (a bread knife with a fine serrated edge is ideal) or a saw, first cut off the crown and then cut the trunk into pieces at least ten centimeters long - up to the height at which you want to keep the mother plant.

  • If you want to root the individual pieces, make a good note of which is up and which is down.
  • This can be done more easily with the help of markers.
  • Now seal the upper part where the plant is to sprout again.
  • For this you can use tree or candle wax as well as special wound sealant for trees.
  • Incidentally, tea lights can be used very well for this purpose.
  • The lower part, on the other hand, remains unsealed, from which the roots should sprout.
  • Immediately plant the cuttings in pots with a mixture of sand and soil.
  • Put them in a warm and bright place
  • and always keep the substrate slightly moist.

After a few weeks to months (sometimes it takes a little patience), you will be able to see from the newly developing shoots that roots must also have formed.

Why sealing makes sense

Basically, sealing is actually not necessary and can also be omitted - the plant will still sprout. In this case, however, the upper end will look rather ugly, since the open wound dries up and cracks can form. Namely, the new shoots will most likely appear below the cut surface. The wax prevents the stump from drying and also ensures that no fungal spores and other pathogens can penetrate.

tips

Always wear gloves when cutting and handling the yucca - the leaves are often serrated and can be very sharp.
