If the yucca is doing well, a small hardware store plant can become a ceiling-high monster - which threatens to become crooked and crooked due to its size. In addition, many yuccas do not branch, but only form a trunk with a single crest. Many a room gardener therefore had the idea of cutting the trunk and artificially stimulating the plant to branch. The measure is controversial because it is not always successful.

Cracks in the trunk can stimulate the yucca palm to form shoots

Branch yucca - no need to carve

In fact, you can have success with carving the trunk: To encourage the yucca to produce new shoots, simply make a 1/2" deep, 1/2" long incision in the trunk, preferably just below the crown. However, you should be more successful with this method:

  • You can cut up large yuccas: All individual parts (including leafless trunk pieces) can be rooted.
  • To stimulate new shoots, decapitate the yucca
  • and plant the tuft in a pot with potting soil and sand.
  • Leave the trunk in the old flower pot.
  • Now it's time to wait: the crested cuttings will probably take root quickly,
  • but stem cuttings often need a few months for new shoots.
  • But then they often get two new shoots - directly under the cut.
  • By the way, you should seal large cuts on the trunk with tree wax (€12.96).

By the way: The planting looks even more lush if you place the rooted former tuft in the same pot as the mother plant and thus grow two trunks. Of course, you should use a larger planter for this.

Shorten and repot the yucca - this is how it works

It is best to use a long and sharp knife (with serrations, such as a bread knife) and/or a saw to cut the yucca. To ensure that rooting and new sprouting really works, you can take this advice to heart:

  • Do not place yucca cuttings in water for rooting.
  • This often only promotes the development of rot, but not roots.
  • Do not let the interfaces dry out, but plant the pieces straight away.
  • With stem cuttings, make a note of which is up and which is down.
  • Because they want to be planted again in exactly the same way.
  • In the case of middle parts, the upper cut surface should be sealed with tree wax.
  • This prevents fungi and other pathogens from entering.

tips

The quickest and easiest way to sprout a cut yucca is in spring - when it is already sprouting in nature.
