- Water during the growth phase
- Water the Christmas cactus when it is in bloom
- Only water very moderately during the rest period
- Place the Christmas cactus outside in a sheltered place
Watering a Christmas cactus requires some finesse. During flowering, the cactus needs more water than during dormancy. Too much watering is detrimental and will result in diseases developing, wilting leaves or the Christmas cactus dying altogether.

Water during the growth phase
From the end of the flowering period until the end of September, the Christmas cactus is only poured when the substrate is two to three centimeters dry at the top. Do the thumb test!
Water so that the root ball is completely soaked and can then dry again.
Water the Christmas cactus when it is in bloom
From November until the end of the flowering period, water the Christmas cactus regularly so that the root ball is always slightly moist. But never leave water in the coaster.
Only water very moderately during the rest period
In October, darken the Christmas cactus so that many flowers develop. During this time, the plant is only moderately watered. The root ball should only be slightly moistened, but should not dry out completely.
Place the Christmas cactus outside in a sheltered place
The Christmas cactus likes to be outside in the summer. However, you must protect it from too much moisture from rainwater. Best place it under a ledge. Do not use coasters or planters that could hold water.
If the summer is very dry, check that the root ball is still moist enough and water accordingly.
tips
Whenever possible, use rainwater to water and spray Christmas cacti. Lime-free tap water is also possible. If the water is too hard, boil it or leave it for at least a week.
