The Dieffenbachia is one of the most popular indoor plants because of its robustness. Vigorous and quite fast-growing, however, it needs a larger flower pot regularly, sometimes even every year. We have summarized for you below how to properly repot plants that are in soil and those in hydroponics.

The right time
As with many indoor plants, spring is the ideal time to repot the Dieffenbachia.
Which substrate is suitable?
When it comes to hydroponics, one thing is clear: you need to get a sufficient quantity of fresh clay pebbles (€19.73) and a larger culture pot.
For conventionally maintained Dieffenbachia you can:
- conventional potting soil
- self-mixed substrate from Lauberde, expanded clay or perlite and sand
use.
The new flower pot should be one, preferably two, sizes larger than the previous one.
How to do hydroponics
Here you have to be particularly careful not to damage the unprotected roots.
- Pour a few centimeters of expanded clay into the new, larger container.
- Carefully lift the plant out of the pot. If a lot of roots have grown through the slits, cut open the container or smash it
- Substrate that is enclosed by the root system does not need to be shaken off.
- Cut off rotten root parts, which can be recognized by their soft consistency.
- Fill with expanded clay, making sure that the Dieffenbachia is upright.
- Put the pot on a few times so that the granules slide into all the gaps and refill if necessary.
- Water well.
Place Dieffenbachia in fresh substrate
Make sure that the new planter has good water drainage, as the Dieffenbachia is very sensitive to waterlogging. First cover it with a potsherd and then fill in a few centimeters of soil. In connection:
- Lift the Dieffenbachia out of the old container.
- If this does not succeed, the pot must be cut open or smashed.
- Cut off damaged root parts and carefully scrape off the used substrate.
- Place Dieffenbachia in the new flowerpot and fill with soil.
- Press carefully.
- Water well so that the fine spaces between the roots fill with soil.
- Pour away excess water in the saucer.
tips
The Dieffenbachia is poisonous in all parts of the plant. Therefore, wear gloves when repotting and all maintenance measures.
