There are many different yucca species, some of which are even hardy, such as the Yucca filamentosa (filamentous yucca) or the Yucca gloriosa (candle yucca). Others, such as the indoor yucca (Yucca elephantipes), which is often incorrectly referred to as the yucca palm, come from warm regions and therefore do not tolerate frost at all.

Not all yuccas can be overwintered outdoors

Indoor yucca is not hardy

Because of this, the hardy species can easily be left outside during the cold season, with some light winter protection if necessary. The Yucca elephantipes cultivated as a houseplant, on the other hand, tolerates temperatures in the higher single digits, but none around or even below zero. You can therefore place these plants on the balcony or terrace during the warm summer months, but you should bring them indoors in good time.

tips

The indoor yucca also needs a wintry resting phase at cool - about five to ten degrees Celsius - temperatures and in a bright location. As a result, the plant will probably even develop flowers.
