Madagascar palms are not palm trees, but belong to the succulent family. Side shoots form on the trunk, from which it is quite easy to grow new offshoots. How to cut and care for cuttings of the Madagascar palm.

The Madagascar palm is propagated via side shoots

The best time for cutting offshoots

If you want to cut offshoots from your madagascar palm, you need a healthy mother plant to do so. It must have formed side shoots.

Trim the side shoots during the growth phase. The cuttings root best if you cut them in the spring.

Grow offshoots from cuttings

The side shoots are cut off just below a knot with a sharp knife or scissors. Then leave them for a few hours to allow the cut ends to dry out. After that, remove the lower leaves.

Some gardeners recommend simply placing the cuttings in a glass of water. In this case, you just have to be careful when planting the rooted cuttings later. The roots are very tender and break easily.

Prepare pots with potting soil

  • Prepare pots
  • Moisten the substrate
  • remove the lower leaves from the cuttings
  • Plug in shoot
  • wrap with cling film
  • set up bright and warm
  • Air the foil occasionally

Prepare small pots with potting soil. Fine cactus soil is sufficient. Stick the shoots into the ground so that at least one eye remains at the top.

Place the pots in as bright and warm a place as possible. However, direct sun is not favourable.

As soon as the first new leaves appear on the shoots, you can repot the small offshoots. Continue caring for them like adult plants.

Protect your hands!

Madagascar palms are not only poisonous in all parts of the plant, they also have many spines on the trunk. These can be very uncomfortable if they penetrate the hand. Simple gloves do not protect against the spikes!

Therefore, wrap the trunk of the Madagascar palm with foil wherever you need to touch it if you want to cut off the side shoots.

Only use clean and sharp cutting tools to avoid spreading germs.

tips

Apart from cuttings, Madagascar palms can also be propagated from seeds. Seeds are available from specialist retailers. However, the ambient temperature must be very high for the seeds to germinate.
