Among the more than 1,500 species, the genus Dendrobium has some magnificent jewels in store for the windowsill. We invite you to take a stroll through the wide spectrum and introduce you to the most beautiful species with tips on care.

The Dendrobium Nobile is one of the most popular orchid species

Dendrobium nobile

Thanks to its stems covered with flowers and leaves and its robust undemanding nature, it is one of the most popular orchids for the windowsill. A Dendrobium nobile blooms in the midst of wintertime and grows in summertime. Central care measures are:

  • A bright, warm location at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius from April to September
  • From October to March bright and cool at 12 to 18 degrees Celsius
  • Water regularly in summer and sips in winter

The Dendrobium nobile is not fertilized during the winter flowering period, but every 4 to 6 weeks from April to September. The grape orchid should be repotted at intervals of 2 to 3 years in order to retain its vitality and willingness to bloom.

Dendrobium phalaenopsis

The natural hybrid of Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis shoots flower stalks out of the shoot tips, on which the butterfly flowers gather in small groups. This Dendrobium species loves temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees in summer and does not want to be cooler than 20 degrees Celsius in winter either. Dendrobium phalaenopsis inspires with a tireless flowering period and rarely takes a breather. If it doesn't flower, a temperature drop of 5 degrees Celsius at night will trigger flowering.

Dendrobium kingianum

We have one of the most beautiful hybrids to thank from this species, as Dendrobium kingianum is a parent of the popular 'Berry Oda', also known as the bamboo orchid. From its numerous pseudobulbs, seductively fragrant flowers rise above rich green, lanceolate leaves from autumn to spring. With regard to care and location requirements, Dendrobium kingianum pulls together with nobile.

tips

Do you like a challenge and do you have an orchid display case? Then the two species Dendrobium jenkinsii and Dendrobium primulinum are a good choice. The need for evenly warm temperatures and a humidity level of more than 80 percent cannot be met in normal room culture. In contrast, the two orchids show themselves from their most beautiful side in the shielded climate of the showcase and terrarium.
