Anthurium andreanum is rarely found as a room decoration, but is extremely popular as an exotic and long-lasting cut flower. If you received a bouquet as a gift or gave it to yourself in which the striking flowers were used, and you have children or animals in your household, you should exercise a little caution.

The flamingo flower is slightly poisonous
Like all arum plants, anthurium andreanum also contains:
- oxalic acid
- insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
When the plant is touched or eaten, these can penetrate the skin and mucous membranes and damage them. The result is skin irritation and minor chemical burns. The symptoms range from swallowing difficulties and increased salivation to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Gastrointestinal bleeding may occur in particularly sensitive individuals.
tips
Due to the toxicity of the plant, you should wear gloves when changing the water and position the bouquet in such a way that children and pets cannot reach it.
