With cuttings you can propagate your delicious window leaf unmixed and uncomplicated. In order to take account of the high moisture requirements of the exotic foliage plant, the classic procedure is to modify an important detail. You can find out how to do it right here.

The cuttings for propagating Monstera deliciosa must have aerial roots

Cut Monstera deliciosa cuttings correctly - this is how it works

Spring is the best time to take a cutting from its mother plant. Choose a young, healthy leaf that has a strong stem and at least one aerial root. Using a sharp, clean knife, cut the top cutting 0.5 to 1.0 cm below this aerial root. Then put the cutting aside for 1 hour to allow the cut to dry.

In this way, rooting succeeds in no time at all

While the interface on the cutting dries, fill a sufficiently large nursery pot with an equal parts mix of standard soil and sand. How to proceed:

  • Place the cutting with its flexible aerial roots in the potting soil
  • Water with rainwater or stagnant tap water
  • Keep the substrate slightly moist at a half-shady, warm window seat
  • Don't give fertilizer

Your Dainty Monstera will root faster if you put a transparent plastic bag over the cutting. Please ensure that there are no points of contact between the bag and the cuttings. For example, 2 to 3 wooden sticks are suitable as spacers. To prevent mold from forming under the hood, it is ventilated daily in the morning and evening.

When a fresh leaf sprouts, the cover can be removed. After 4 to 6 weeks, a stable root system will have formed so that you can repot your young, delicious Monstera. Now the cultivation leads to the normal care program for an adult Monstera deliciosa.

tips

If your Dainty Monstera accidentally loses a leaf that breaks off along with the stem, don't throw it away. Although there is no finished aerial root on the offshoot, there are good prospects of rooting in the water glass. However, this variant of vegetative propagation takes 8 to 9 months for the cutting to develop its own root system.
