The German oak is probably the best-known and most important tree species in Germany. It not only grows in the forest, but is also often planted in gardens and parks. Unfortunately, the German oak is susceptible to diseases and pests. What diseases can occur?

Even stately oaks get sick from time to time

Diseases of the German Oak

  • mildew
  • wilt
  • cancer
  • fire sponge

All of these diseases are caused by harmful fungi. They can be so severe that the tree dies, even if it is a very old specimen. Oaks are also endangered by increasing environmental pollution, so that they do not cope well with pathogens.

The signs of disease are very different. Watch your oak carefully. As soon as the leaves start to curl and dry up or the trunk starts to show abnormalities, you should investigate the cause of the changes. A white or gray coating indicates powdery mildew. Many oaks are affected by this in Germany.

Measures to prevent diseases

To prevent this, you must ensure that the German oak finds ideal conditions. Oaks need soil that is always slightly moist. Water the trees not only in hot summers, but also in very dry winters.

Provide sufficient nutrients. Fertilize the oak regularly, especially when it is young and the roots do not go deep enough into the ground.

It is beneficial to mulch the soil under a German oak. This prevents the soil from drying out and at the same time provides the tree with nutrients that are released as the mulch material decomposes.

Cut oak properly

Branches affected by disease should be removed immediately. Saw them off clean and smooth. Seal larger wounds with balm to prevent pathogens from entering the tree.

Do not leave fallen leaves from diseased trees, but remove them from the garden altogether.

Which pests can occur?

  • oak gall wasps
  • oak moth
  • Oak Processionary Moth

Pests usually appear on the leaves. Fight an infestation with suitable measures. However, most pests do not cause too much damage as long as the oak is otherwise healthy.

An exception is an infestation by the oak processionary moth. Since this pest is highly irritating to the skin, it should be removed by professionals.

tips

The German oak is one of the most valuable native tree species. Over 200 species of insects, various species of beetles, butterflies, birds, squirrels and other mammals feed on the flowers and fruits.
