The easy-care rubber tree does not deserve its reputation as a somewhat old-fashioned houseplant. In the meantime, its popularity is increasing again, not least because the evergreen plant can also come up with interesting leaf colors in some varieties.

The rubber tree is an excellent houseplant and can also be grown as a bonsai

Which room is best for my gum tree?

The rubber tree, which is not hardy, likes it warm and bright. Therefore, many bedrooms are unsuitable. On the one hand, they are usually not or only slightly heated, on the other hand, the windows of the bedrooms are often on the north side of a house.

Moderately heated in winter, with a temperature of at least 12 °C and an east-facing window, the bedroom is well suited as a winter quarters. The resulting hibernation offers your rubber tree relaxation. In the spring he needs more warmth again and should possibly move. Otherwise it will not form new shoots.

A bright, warm living room is practically ideal for the gum tree. However, there should be no draft and your rubber tree should not be in the blazing midday sun. The large leaves are quite prone to sunburn. The rubber tree is welcome to spend the summer outdoors if the temperatures are right. Slowly get him used to the fresh air in a slightly shady spot.

Is the rubber tree also suitable for offices?

The rubber tree is an almost ideal plant for office spaces, because it doesn't mind the irregular watering there. Quite the opposite, because it doesn't need a lot of water and copes much better with slight dryness than with waterlogging. It only needs fertilizer every six weeks. However, you should not put it in a dark corner, because a rubber tree needs a lot of light.

The essentials in brief:

  • well suited for the warm living room
  • Bedroom not an ideal location
  • ideal: window to the east or west
  • unsuitable: windows to the south or north
  • needs a lot of light
  • does not tolerate drafts
