Excessive watering is one of the most common mistakes in orchid care. If the exotic flowers are too wet, root rot is inevitable. You can find out here which strategy you can use to save the floral care case.

Too much moisture damages the orchid enormously

This is how you recognize possible rescue options

In order to professionally assess the chances of your too-wet orchid surviving, unpot the problem child. As long as at least 1 or 2 silvery-green aerial roots show up, a rescue operation is worth the effort. The prospects of a successful course are significantly increased if 1 leaf, 1 pseudobulb or 1 shoot is presented in rich green. An orchid is only actually dead when it has no green plant parts either in the root network or in the herbaceous area.

Repot an orchid that is too wet in a timely manner - this is how it works

Once you have explored the possible survival chances of your wet orchid, the plant should be repotted immediately in fresh, dry substrate. How to proceed correctly:

  • Remove the wet substrate and cut off any rotten root strands with a sanitized knife
  • In the new culture pot, fill a 2 cm layer of expanded clay (€19.73) above the water drain as drainage
  • Fill in some special substrate for orchids to position the trimmed root ball in the middle

Now fill in the rest of the substrate piece by piece, breaking open the pot in the meantime so that the pieces of bark are distributed without gaps. Do not water or submerge the orchid that is too wet for the next 8 to 10 days. The plant should only be sprayed with soft water every 2 to 3 days.

Cut off excess stems

If there is still a flowering stem or pseudobulb on the plant, please cut it off. As a result, the orchid focuses on root and leaf growth.

tips

Charcoal powder is excellent for disinfecting cuts on sensitive orchids cheaply and effectively. To do this, place a piece of charcoal in a mortar and grind it into a fine powder. If exposed plant tissue is pollinated with it after pruning, pests and pathogens don't stand a chance.
