Cypresses are very fast-growing and, if cared for properly, have many green needles. The nutrient requirements of the trees are correspondingly high. Regular fertilization ensures that the trees grow healthily. How to properly fertilize a cypress.

Provide sufficient nutrients when planting
To give the cypresses a good start, you should ensure that the trees have enough nutrients before planting.
Before planting the trees, improve the potting soil with
- mature compost
- deposited manure
- horn shavings
- conifer fertilizer
In the first year after planting, further fertilization is then not necessary.
Fertilize cypress in the garden
From the second year after planting, you should provide the cypress in the garden with additional nutrients. Compost, animal manure or horn shavings (32.93€) are suitable for this. In the spring, apply the fertilizer around the tree or between the hedges and work it in lightly with a rake.
The cypress also gets very good if you spread a mulch layer. It ensures that the soil does not dry out too much and the trees get a light winter protection. The mulch material decomposes over the course of the year, releasing new nutrients.
If you don't have organic fertilizer available, use a slow-release conifer fertilizer available at garden supply stores. Depending on the variety, this fertilizer needs to be applied once or twice a year.
Fertilizer for cypresses in buckets
Cypresses that you tend in tubs need more fertilizer than trees that can take care of themselves in the garden.
Fertilize potted plants with a liquid fertilizer that you add to the irrigation water. Water according to instructions and avoid watering directly on the trunk.
You should also repot cypresses in pots every two to three years and replace the soil at the same time. After repotting, the cypress does not need any further fertilizer for the first few months, as the fresh soil contains sufficient nutrients.
tips
If your cypress trees are turning brown without the cause being too much or too little soil moisture, a nutrient deficiency may be to blame. It's a good idea to have the soil analyzed in a lab to find out the right fertilizers.
