For weeks they have been checking the plant every day in the hope that the first flowers will appear. But there's just nothing. What are the possible causes and what can be done to stimulate flowering?

If the Strelitzia shows no or only a few flowers, a location that is too dark can be the cause

Location too dark

The Strelitzia is often too dark. However, it needs a lot of light and warmth. This applies in particular to the summertime, when it usually blooms as a houseplant in this country. However, flowering time may vary; some Strelitzia lovers report blooming Strelitzias in spring.

It is therefore best to place the Strelitzia outside on the balcony or terrace from the end of May. There it should receive enough light to be stimulated to flower.

The location can be in the blazing sun. But be careful: this plant does not tolerate temperatures above 30 °C. This puts them under stress and can in turn lead to the failure of the flower.

Too low temperatures

Another reason why the parrot flower does not bloom can be that the prevailing temperatures are too low. A warm place is important for flowers to form. The location should be at least 20 °C, preferably 25 °C warm.

The plant was over-fertilized

Furthermore, over-fertilization leads to the loss of flowers. The leaves grow abundantly and look rich green. However, there is no sign of flowers… Here it helps to stop fertilizing immediately and, if necessary, to repot the plant in fresh soil.

Other possible reasons

But there are other possible reasons that can be behind a failure of the flower:

  • no hibernation observed
  • Damage to the roots e.g. B. by repotting, sharing
  • too dry soil
  • Too young age (flowers for the first time at 4 - 6 years)
  • severe pest infestation
  • illness
  • draft

These hints can help:

  • keep bright and cool in winter (5 to 12 °C)
  • water less during the winter
  • be careful when repotting: roots break easily
  • water regularly in summer (watering amount depends on the leaf mass)
  • Fertilize sparingly from March to August and at intervals of 2 weeks

tips

It is best to only buy flowering specimens! Then you know where you stand and can be sure that these are not young seedlings that flower for the first time after 4 to 6 years.
