As a lush flowering ground cover, the cushion phlox in the garden usually requires little care. However, the prerequisite for this is the well thought-out selection of a suitable location for the planting.

Cushion phlox thrives beautifully in the rock garden

This plant loves the sun

So that the cushion phlox can form lush, rampant plant cushions with numerous flowers, it should be planted in the spring (if necessary also between spring and autumn) in the sunniest possible place in the garden. Half-sun locations are also tolerated, but during the flowering period they usually cause the cushion phlox to flower a little less pronounced. The plant cushions that overflow at the sides are particularly suitable for decorative greening at the following locations in the garden:

  • as border planting of terraces
  • at the crest of natural stone walls
  • for edging stepping stone paths
  • in the rock garden

This is how the soil for the cushion phlox should be

The ideal soil for the cushion phlox does not have to be particularly rich in nutrients, but it does have to be permeable and mineral. To prevent waterlogging in normal garden soil, you can work some sand or fine gravel into the soil before planting.

tips

Since the cushion phlox reproduces relatively quickly and vigorously under favorable conditions, planting at a distance of about 20 to 30 cm is sufficient to quickly obtain a continuous carpet of plants.
