As a barberry plant, the sacred bamboo is not a "real" bamboo but a shrub. So it has no stalks either, but rather one trunk or many, because it grows with multiple trunks. It's also evergreen, so it doesn't lose its leaves in winter.
When the sacred bamboo sheds its leaves, care mistakes are usually behind it
Instead, it remains in its full beauty. The foliage turns yellow, orange, or red in fall, depending on the variety. In addition, bright red berries form from the flowers, which remain on the bush for a long time. This makes the sacred bamboo an extraordinary eye-catcher in the garden. However, the berries are poisonous, as is the whole shrub.
In the spring, the heavenly bamboo regain their usual green color without the foliage falling off beforehand. The leaves just turn green again. Unfortunately, the heavenly bamboo is only partially hardy. However, there are now hardy breeds. If you live in a rather harsh area, you might choose one of these for your garden.
What can I do if my heavenly bamboo is losing leaves?
If your Sacred Bamboo is losing its leaves, then something is wrong. First of all, check the location and care. Is your sky bamboo getting enough light and water? If the soil has dried out too much, you should water it well. Did you use lime-free water?
If your tap water is very calcareous, it is better to switch to watering with rainwater. Perhaps you have watered the shrub too much and it now has wet feet. In this case, you should water less in the future and possibly loosen the soil or create a drainage layer so that excess water can run off better in the future.
