In the summer, a knight star works diligently to form buds inside the bulb for the next flowering period. As a result, a faded amaryllis once again uses all its strength for its growth instead of taking a floral break. Here you can find out how to skilfully bring a hippeastrum through the summer.

Amaryllis can spend the summer outdoors

The outdoor season begins in May

You have done a good job as a hobby gardener if you have freed the knight star from its withered flowers and yellowed main stem at the end of the flowering period. At the usual window seat, you continue the water and nutrient supply undeterred, so that your amaryllis proudly presents itself with a dense tuft of leaves in spring. After the ice saints have left, the following summer care program starts:

  • Relocate the knight star to a sunny, warm spot on the balcony or in the garden
  • Before that, get the Hippeastrum used to the sun for a period of 8 to 10 days in a semi-shady place
  • Optionally put the plant together with its pot in the ground
  • Water regularly and fertilize liquid every 14 days

If you plant your amaryllis in the bed, it is an advantage if the bulb stays in the pot to protect against voracious voles. In this way, autumnal clearing is easier to do.

Summer flowering not excluded

While you take care of your knight's star in good health throughout the summer, the South American plant sometimes shows its temperament by flowering in the middle of summer. Accept the floral gift gratefully and seamlessly continue the recommended care program, supplemented by these cutting measures:

  • In summer, consistently cut wilted flowers from the main stem
  • Only cut the stems when they are no longer flowering
  • Cut out single, dead leaves from the tuft of leaves

Please leave all green leaves on the Ritterstern until they have moved in during the autumn rest phase.

tips

You will only successfully get a knight's star in a jar through the summer if you pot the bulb at the end of the flowering period. To do this, place half of the leafy tuber in a mix of cactus and flower substrate. Oversummer the amaryllis on the sunny balcony according to these care instructions.
