It belongs in the land of fables that onion flowers can do without a supply of nutrients. In the first year this may still succeed. From the second year onwards, experienced hobby gardeners prefer to give their tulips a helping hand so that they don't run out of energy reserves. You can find out here how to fertilize tulips according to all the rules of gardening art.

These fertilizers are good for tulips and the environment
Organic fertilizers guarantee a constant supply of valuable nutrients to your tulip bulbs. The natural ingredients are first processed by busy soil organisms in such a way that they are available for the roots. Since this process takes place continuously, it is also hardly possible to overdose. In contrast, mineral preparations with a concentrated charge spur growth, are quickly consumed and must be re-administered.
Mature compost is therefore the first choice for fertilizing tulips in harmony with nature. You aim in the same direction with horn shavings (32.93€) or horn meal, which are broken down somewhat more quickly in a way that is suitable for plants. For hobby gardeners who do not have their own compost heap, specialist retailers have suitable products ready. These include Oscorna Animalin garden fertilizer, Naturen organic garden fertilizer or Naturen organic horse manure pellets.
The best dates
It is beneficial if you plant tulip bulbs in soil enriched with compost and horn shavings. This is how you prevent supply gaps right from the start. In addition, we recommend considering the following fertilizer dates in the care program:
- Cover the planting site with compost in the fall
- From March every 2 weeks, lightly work an organic fertilizer into the soil with a rake
- Water with normal water after each fertilizing
- At the end of the flowering period, interrupt the nutrient supply until autumn
If you cultivate tulips in pots, we recommend using an organic liquid fertilizer. Please ensure that you do not apply the agent to a dried substrate surface. If in doubt, first pour in a little clear water before adding the liquid fertilizer.
tips
Organically fertilized tulip bulbs are more robust and protect nature. By choosing to use natural fertilizers, you are sending a clear signal against commercial tulip farming practices. Almost 60 kilograms of chemical toxins are used there per hectare of cultivated land every year - and the trend is rising.
