A lot can go wrong when cutting, just as bad when fertilizing, and yet the Japanese peony is so popular. This is mainly due to its fabulous flowers, which are red, pink, white or colored in between. How do you multiply them?

The Japanese peony is best propagated from seeds

Finishing - how does it work?

As a rule, Japanese peonies are grafted specimens. In order to get another plant with the same properties, it is necessary to use the grafting method. For this you need a base like the mother plant and a scion of the plant. The shoot is grafted onto the stock or roots of another shrub peony.

seeds for propagation

Those who do not attach particular importance to identical properties can also propagate their Japanese peony using seeds. However, this is quite a lengthy affair.

Sowing works like this:

1. Expose seeds to a cold period lasting several weeks (e.g. in the refrigerator).
2. Sow seeds 1 cm deep in potting soil.
3. Keep substrate moist.
4. Put in a warm place.
5. Plant out in a suitable location from a size of 10 cm.

division in autumn

Many Japanese peonies are perennials. You can tell by the fact that they grow to between 50 and 60 cm and retreat into the ground in the autumn of each year. If you have a Japanese peony growing as a perennial, propagating it is dead easy!

Between October and November is the ideal time to divide the perennial. After pruning, dig up the perennial and clean the root area so that you can clearly see the buds.

Now divide the root piece into as many parts as you need. You can use a knife or spade to do this. It is important that each section has at least 3 buds. Then just plant, water and you're done!

tips

It can take several years for the freshly propagated specimens to flower for the first time. Be sure to factor this in.
