The peony, also known as the farmer's rose, cuts an excellent figure with its bright, large flowers, and not just in the cottage garden. They also combine very well with other best small-flowered plants, but should not be transplanted too often.

Older farmhouse roses are a low-maintenance garden beauty

Plant farm roses

It is best to plant your peony in a sunny or semi-shady spot, sheltered from the wind, with well-drained soil. Do not put the plant too deep in the ground, otherwise it will not flower well later. If the roots are very long, shorten them a little before planting. Shrub peonies like it slightly shady, so their delicate flowers last longer.

Water and fertilize farm roses properly

A blooming peony needs a lot of water, but at least the older plant is quite capable of taking care of itself thanks to its long taproots. Younger peonies, on the other hand, should be watered sufficiently as soon as the soil has dried.

When watering, however, be sure to avoid waterlogging, as the rustic rose does not tolerate this well. If the soil is rather firm, give your older peony an occasional extra water. However, it does not need fertilizer, just some compost or humus in the spring.

Pruning peasant roses

The beautiful, large blossoms of the peony also come into their own in a vase. To do this, cut the stems with the not yet fully bloomed buds in the morning before they are in full sun. The perennial peony does not need regular pruning.

Peasant roses in winter

Both perennial and shrub peonies are hardy. The above-ground plant parts of perennial peonies wither away in winter. As soon as they become unsightly and wilted in autumn, you can also cut back the plants. The shrub peony, on the other hand, is only pruned in spring. If you like it, you can even raise this peony to a standard.

The most important care tips:

  • sunny to partially shaded and wind-protected location
  • permeable soil
  • Water young plants well
  • hardly fertilize at all
  • Cut back in fall or spring
  • hardy

tips

If possible, avoid transplanting the peony. She doesn't like it at all and doesn't always survive it.
