Have you planted pampas grass and are now impatiently waiting for the first blossom? You have to have a bit of patience, because young plants only flower after a few years. If there is no flowering later, the perennial may simply be in the wrong location. Sometimes care errors are also responsible for a lack of flowering.

A lack of nutrients can be the reason why the pampas grass does not bloom

No flowering in the wrong location and care mistakes

  • Pampas grass too young
  • too shady location
  • Perennial is too dry / too wet
  • too few nutrients
  • injured young shoots

With freshly planted pampas grass, you have to wait a few years for the first flowering. This also applies if you have multiplied the perennial by dividing it.

Wrong location

Pampas grass likes it warm and sunny. If the perennial does not get at least four hours of direct sun per day, buds will not develop. Therefore, only plant pampas grass in a sunny location. Provide wind protection so that the fronds do not break later.

The ornamental grass prefers dry soil. It does not tolerate waterlogging at all. Thoroughly loosen the soil before planting. You should mix very dense soil with sand and small stones to make it more permeable.

Incidentally, slight slopes are very well suited, as the water drains off well here and does not accumulate at the roots.

Wrong care

Very often the pampas grass does not bloom because of one or more care mistakes. Even if the perennial likes it dry, it must not dry out completely. Water more often when it's hot. Pampas grass in the bucket must be regularly supplied with water.

A plant that grows as fast as pampas grass needs a lot of nutrients. It is best if you spread compost around the perennial every few weeks and rake in lightly. Otherwise, fertilize with liquid fertilizer for ornamental grasses.

Pampas grass is cut in spring. You have to be careful not to injure the young shoots. If they are damaged, the perennial will not flower.

Male plants flower only a little

If the pampas grass is in a good spot, has enough nutrients and moisture, but is still not flowering, you may have grown a male plant.

Pampas grass is dioecious, meaning there are male and female plants. While female plants produce many of the ornamental fronds, flowering on male plants tends to be sparse. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about it.

Be sure to only plant female pampas grass. You should therefore not sow plants from seeds you have collected yourself, as you do not know whether a male or female plant will result. If you buy seeds, there is a good chance that you will only grow female plants.

tips

Pampas grass blooms late in the year. Some varieties start flowering in July, while others don't show their colored fronds until September.
