Zinnia are native to the southern United States and the Mediterranean, where they thrive in semi-desert and rocky steppe areas. They have been cultivated as an annual garden perennial in our gardens since the 19th century. Choosing the right location is important for good growth, and we would like to go into this in more detail here.

The zinnia needs a lot of sun

Zinnias are sun hungry

As their natural home suggests, zinnias love warmth and therefore need a full sun and wind-protected place in the perennial bed, even in our latitudes. The sun worshiper easily copes with midday temperatures of over thirty degrees.

Waterlogging, to which the zinnia, which is optimally adapted to sandy soils, reacts very sensitively, must be avoided at all costs. For this reason, ensure the necessary drainage before planting.

tips

Zinnias form a beautiful unit with other sun-loving perennials, such as fragrant cosmos or the attractive coneflower. But they also do extremely well as a solitary plant in a bed in full sun.
