Long stalks, to which tufts of leaves cling together, make up the basic appearance of Cyprus grass. Both in an open aquarium and cultivated outside, Cyprus grass can arouse the interest of cats…

Although Cyprus grass is not poisonous to cats, it is very sharp

Sharp-edged leaves - a source of danger

Cats love to nibble on certain plants. They also need it for their health. Would Cyprus grass be a suitable plant? Although this popular houseplant is not poisonous, it does pose a threat to cats that should not be underestimated. Their leaves are hard and, depending on the variety, extremely sharp-edged.

When cats hurt themselves…

Cyprus grass is often attractive to cats. But beware: If you bite off some of it and swallow the parts whole, you run the risk of endangering your health. If cats nibble too often on Cyprus grass, it could lead to irritation of the gastric mucosa or even inflammation of the gastric mucosa.

The sharp edges of the leaves can also injure the cat's esophagus. This is especially true when the cat regurgitates the unchewed Cyprus grass. Red sputum (contains blood) tells you that your cat has been injured. In the worst case, it can even be fatal.

It is therefore advisable not to buy Cyprus grass in the first place - at least not if you are a cat owner. Alternatively, there are these options:

  • Put Cyprus grass out of reach
  • Do not let cats out of your sight while nibbling on the plant
  • prefer to buy special cat grass, which is also identified as such

tips

Of all species, if any, dwarf cyprus grass (Cyperus alternifolius 'Nana') is best suited to cats. The reason: It has extremely delicate leaves without sharp edges.
