It looks very similar to the well-known papyrus plant and is nevertheless very idiosyncratic. Cyprus grass looks like a graceful reed plant and can even be grown indoors. To what extent it needs a pruning, read below!

A cut is generally not necessary
Cyprus grass also grows well without regular pruning. So generally it is not necessary to cut it. But there are several reasons that can make a cut quite useful.
Extremely fast-growing - up to 250 cm per year!
The main reason is that Cyprus grass is extremely fast-growing. It can grow up to 250 cm per year. However, this is not usually the case in an indoor culture. Rather outdoor plants dare so rapidly up in the air. So if your Cyprus grass is too big for you, you can shorten it.
Cut back before overwintering
Since the Cyprus grass is not hardy, it should be overwintered. It is advisable to cut it down before it is put up for wintering. It can be radically shortened - depending on how you like it.
Reach for the pruning tool to obtain cuttings or offshoots
If you want to multiply your Cyprus grass, you can do so using cuttings or offshoots. This also requires a cut. This is how the propagation of cuttings works:
- Cut off stalks that are 15 cm long
- Cut the leaves in half at the stem
- Place the tuft of leaves upside down in a glass of water
- put in a bright and warm place
- after 2 to 4 weeks the cutting is rooted
A cut is also appropriate for obtaining offshoots. The offshoots appear above the head of a Cyprus grass. Cut off the offshoot and proceed as with the cuttings.
Remove brown shoots
In the spring, the Cyprus grass often looks a bit battered if it has been overwintered in its own 4 walls. Some parts of the plant are dried up or brown. You can simply cut off such unsightly areas (wilted, dried up, brown). They grow back.
tips
Some types of Cyprus grass only reach a maximum height of 40 cm. With these, you rarely have to use scissors or a knife to shorten them.
