Hanging tomatoes are ideal for growing in pots, especially in hanging baskets or in flower boxes on the balcony. These are usually branched bush tomatoes that can be grown without a stick and at some point the shoots will hang due to their own weight. We present some suitable varieties in this article.

Depending on the variety, hanging tomatoes also produce red or yellow fruits

Hybrid or seed-proof?

In our overview of the best hanging tomato varieties, we have deliberately included only seed-solid varieties, as experience has shown that they are much more aromatic than the common hybrid varieties. For a long time, hybrids were only bred for yield and fruit size, and they also bring better yields than the open-seed varieties, but they don't taste nearly as good.

Cherry and bush tomatoes are best suited for pot cultivation

For a pot culture you should only choose cherry or bush tomatoes, whereby you should pay attention to the space available on your balcony with the small cherry tomatoes: These often develop very long shoots of at least 250 centimetres. Bottle and beefsteak tomatoes, on the other hand, are not suitable for cultivation in tubs.
