The short-lived morning glory is usually grown as an annual climber in the garden or in pots on the balcony in Central Europe. If a few tips are followed when sowing, the colorful flower funnels of the originally Mexican climbers will soon appear without much care.

Properties of the seeds
In the case of the relatively small seeds of the morning glory, one gram of seed contains around 35 to 45 grains. Since there is an almost unmanageable number of color variants, a number of subspecies with, for example, blue, pink or white flower funnels are also available in specialist shops. The following properties should be observed when sowing:
- dark germs
- Morning glory are sensitive to frost
- optimum germination temperature: 18 to 20 degrees Celsius
- Germination time: around two weeks
It will help germination if you let the seeds soak in water for a few hours before sowing. You can also save a lot of time and effort when pricking out if you sow 3 to 4 seeds directly at the planned location or in a separate pot at a time.
Prefer morning glory in the house
Although morning glory are extremely fast-growing climbing plants, they cannot be sown and planted before the ice saints due to their sensitivity to cold temperatures. You can give the morning glory on the balcony or in the garden a head start in terms of growth in spring if you prefer the young plants on the windowsill. For optimal timing of transplanting into the garden, sow seeds indoors between late March and early April.
Direct sowing of morning glory outdoors
From the end of May you can also sow the morning glory directly on the spot outdoors. When choosing a location, make sure that it is as sunny as possible with some protection from wind and rain. If pets and small children play in your garden, they should not get close to the sometimes poisonous subspecies of morning glory. This problem can be solved if you sow the morning glory in hanging planters or balcony boxes (€109.00) at a height that children and small animals cannot reach.
tips
If you want to collect morning glory seeds yourself for the following season, you must let the seed pods fully mature. This propagation method, which is not true to the variety, can lead to interesting color crossings.
