Flowering for a long time, but undemanding and easy to care for - the cosmos is an almost ideal summer flower for almost every garden. The only thing she really asks for is lots of light. Then you can enjoy the colorful flowers.

The Cosmea usually does not need to be watered

The best location and the right soil

The cosmos loves a full sun location. Even in light shade or semi-shade, it will not bloom as lavishly as it is in its nature. The soil should be permeable and light, but not too rich in nutrients. The jewelry basket is quite undemanding. You can safely do without fertilizer with this plant. You should only water your Cosmeen a little if it is very dry.

Plant the jewelry basket

Since the cosmos is quite sensitive to cold, you should wait until the end of May when no more night frosts are to be expected before planting the young plants. Depending on the variety, the ideal planting distance is between twenty and forty centimetres. After all, jewelry baskets are between 40 cm and 2 m tall. Water the freshly planted Cosmea well, even if it otherwise only needs a little water.

Grow young plants yourself

You don't necessarily have to buy the young plants you need, because the decorative basket is easy to pull forward. You can get the seeds from specialist retailers or from old plants. You can start sowing in pots as early as March or April. Be sure to use nutrient-poor substrate or mix your potting soil with some sand.

The best planting tips for the jewelry basket:

  • sunny location
  • permeable light soil
  • little nutrients
  • possibly prefer young plants in spring
  • Water well after planting
  • no fertilizer
  • later water little or not at all

tips

If you would like to combine the decorative basket with other plants, then pay attention to the appropriate growth height. Some Cosmeen overgrow their neighbors too much.
