The indoor calla likes a nutrient-rich soil and must be additionally fertilized during the growing season. However, it must not be too much fertilizer either, because the plant cannot tolerate too high a concentration of nutrients.

Which fertilizer is suitable?
A simple flower fertilizer (1.95€) from the hardware store is sufficient. When dosing, be sure to follow the directions on the packaging. The old sentence "a lot helps a lot" is not true when fertilizing the calla. It is better to use less than too much fertilizer.
If you fertilize too much or too often, the calla may not flower or even die altogether.
Fertilize depending on the growth phase
The nutrient requirements of the indoor calla are based on the three phases of growth:
- Before flowering
- during flowering
- In the winter
Before flowering, the plant needs less fertilizer than during flowering. Don't fertilize at all in winter.
Fertilize calla properly before flowering
The growth phase begins immediately after the hibernation. If you just planted the calla in brand new soil, you don't need to fertilize it at first.
If it continues to grow in the previous pot, start fertilizing as soon as the first green tips appear.
During this time, fertilize the plant every two weeks.
Fertilize calla during flowering
The nutrient requirement of houseplants is particularly high during the flowering period. Once buds have formed, add fertilizer to the irrigation water once a week.
Calla fertilize in winter
After the flowering period, the calla hibernates in the pot. During this time, it needs neither water nor nutrients.
Under no circumstances should you supply the plant with fertilizer during the dormant period. You must not even water them so that the soil dries out completely.
If you overwinter the room calla as a flower bulb without any soil, the question of fertilizing does not arise.
tips and tricks
Calla does not need any special potting soil. Normal potting soil or garden soil will do. It is only important that the soil is fresh and free of fungal spores and other diseases. If in doubt, better buy new soil.
