For a long time, calla lilies were only available with white bracts that enclose the bulb-shaped flower like a funnel. In the past, the flower was primarily used as a mourning flower. Due to the colorful breeds, calla flowers are very popular on many occasions.

The calla comes in many different colors

Calla in many colors

In addition to the white flowering calla plants, varieties with many bright colors are now commercially available. The color spectrum ranges from light yellow, through apricot and pink to dark violet. There are even varieties like the Calla "Cantor", whose bracts appear almost black.

A two-tone variety with the beautiful name "Vermeer" is still quite new. Their bracts are white on the outside and show a deep violet color on the inside.

The white varieties are very decorative when the bulb protrudes from the bracts in a strong yellow.

Colored calla like it a little warmer

The care requirements of colored Calla varieties do not differ in principle from those of the white varieties. Just like these, variegated species require alternating wet and dry conditions.

However, the colored indoor plants like it a little warmer. While the white varieties feel most comfortable at temperatures between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius, it can be a little warmer for colored varieties at 18 to 22 degrees.

Calla flowers for weddings, funeral bouquets and other occasions

Calla flowers with their beautiful colors give bouquets that extra something for almost every occasion. Because of the eye-catching color and shape of the bract of the flower, a calla also makes a very good single flower in the vase.

tips and tricks

Calla can not only be cared for as a houseplant in the house or on the terrace. In summer, the bulbs can also be planted directly in the garden. Since very few varieties are hardy, you have to dig them up in autumn and overwinter them indoors.
