Scented jasmine is particularly decorative as a solitary shrub in the garden if you simply let it grow. Regular trimming can only make sense when caring for a hedge. When and how to properly cut scented jasmine.

Scented jasmine does not necessarily need regular pruning

When is it necessary to cut scented jasmine?

  • care cut
  • pruning
  • rejuvenation
  • hedge trimming

If you plant scented jasmine as a decorative eye-catcher in the garden, it is best to just leave it alone. In this way, it retains its natural appearance and will thank you with a true blessing of flowers.

If you pull the shrub in a hedge, regular pruning is necessary.

If the scented jasmine grows too much for you, feel free to trim it down. However, the shrub will take up to two years to recover from this pruning. At first it will hardly bear any flowers.

The best time for a pruning

Scented jasmine develops its flowers on the thin side shoots. The plant for the buds is laid in the previous year. If you prune the scented jasmine at the wrong time, you will cut off any future blooms.

For heavier pruning, the best time is right after flowering. However, do not cut back the shrub too much, just bring it into shape.

In order to continuously rejuvenate the scented jasmine, you should cut off two to four old shoots close to the ground every year. Young shoots develop there and the ornamental shrub does not wilt so quickly at the bottom.

Cut scented jasmine in the hedge

Scented jasmine has a particularly decorative effect in a natural hedge. However, you cannot avoid regular cutting here.

The hedge trimming is ideally done after flowering. If you cut back scented jasmine in the fall, it will have no or very few flowers the following year.

Do not work without gloves!

Like all jasmine species, scented jasmine can be poisonous. If you don't know if your shrub contains toxins, it's a good idea to wear gloves to be on the safe side.

If the plant sap comes into contact with the bare skin when cutting, it can cause skin irritation.

tips

Scented jasmine can be propagated very well by cuttings. Cut cuttings after flowering and place in moist plant substrate. The new shrub can be transplanted as early as next year.
