Goldenrod (or goldenrod, as the plant is sometimes known) is a popular perennial in gardens, mainly for its profuse, bright yellow flowers. However, the plant spreads very quickly - not only in the garden, but also in the wild. In some regions, the neophyte is now crowding out less assertive native plants, thereby endangering botanical diversity. But this is not the only reason why you should limit the growth of the goldenrod: without appropriate measures, the plant quickly threatens to overgrow your garden.

The goldenrod is difficult to keep in check

Confine goldenrod in the garden

Goldenrods reproduce in two different ways: via their rhizomes and via self-seeding. In order to limit the spread in the garden, you should prevent the seeds from ripening and spreading by cutting back in good time. To do this, cut back the goldenrod immediately after flowering. You should also install root barriers in the soil to prevent the plant from developing beyond a predetermined limit. These root or rhizome barriers can also be installed later.

How to install a root barrier

In order to effectively prevent spread via the rhizomes, the root barrier purchased in specialist shops should be buried at least 70 centimeters deep around the planting area. In addition, the barrier should protrude at least two inches from the ground so that the root suckers cannot simply climb over it. In the case of a subsequent installation, carefully remove all root parts located outside the rhizome barrier.

fight goldenrod

Controlling goldenrod effectively is no easy task - and it also requires patience. There are several ways to get rid of goldenrod:

  • Mow the perennial several times and regularly before flowering to just above the ground.
  • Dig up all rhizomes and roots.
  • But be careful, goldenrod will sprout again even from the smallest root parts.
  • Cut down the plant and cover the planting area with UV-blocking sheeting.
  • You should apply these in the spring and leave them for at least three months.
  • Then remove the dead plant parts.
  • However, this effective method has the disadvantage that other plants are also killed
  • and is therefore only suitable for small areas.

tips

Other proven ways to control goldenrod include milling or gouging.
