Although many ornamental grass species are considered hardy, there are circumstances that make overwintering seem sensible. What are they and how does hibernation work?

Then hibernation makes sense!
Ornamental grasses can stay outside through the winter. But outside, they should be protected when:
- they were only planted in autumn
- they are in a rough spot
- they were accidentally cut down in the fall
- they are kept in bucket culture
- the temperatures suddenly drop very sharply (below -15 °C)
Overwintering measures for grasses
An ornamental grass outdoors can be covered with brushwood, a layer of bark or compost mulch, fleece or leaves in the root area. Larger specimens should also be tied together. Ornamental grasses in the tub are cut down, wrapped with a warming material in the planter area and placed on a block of wood or styrofoam.
tips
Make sure you remove the winter protection early in March. Otherwise the new growth will suffer!
